Dharma practice: General prayers

Mahasiddha Thangtong Gyalpo’s Outer, Inner and Secret Refuge Vow

Ma namkha tang nyampé semchen tamché lama sangyé rinpoché la kyabsu chio

Together with all beings as numerous as the sky is vast, all of whom have been my mothers, I take refuge in the precious Lama, who is the Buddha

Sangyé chö tang gendün nam la kyabsu chio

I take refuge in the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha

Lama yidam khandroi tsok la kyabsu chio

I take refuge in the hosts of Lamas, Yidams and Dakinıs

Rangsem tongsel chö kyi ku la kyabsu chio

Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha; I take refuge in the hosts of Lamas, Yidams and Dakinıs; I take refuge in the Dharmakaya, the inseparable clarity and emptiness of my own mind.

OM MANI PADME HUNG HRIH

This prayer carries the blessings of Avalokiteshvara, who transmitted it to Chöjé Kah-ngapa and told him to give it to Gelong Tsöndrü Zangpo (i.e. Thangtong Gyalpo). If the latter promulgated it to the people of this world, he said, it would dispel all sickness, evil and obstacles in the immediate, as well as bestowing protection from the lower realms. May virtue ensue!
